AI Engineer, ML Engineer and data scientist
Three roles that often get mixed up when building a team. Working with AI is not always the same job.
AI Engineering is not the same thing as data science.
A common mistake is to think that "working with AI" is always the same role. It is not. These are three different jobs:
- Data scientist: draws conclusions from data and builds models from it.
- ML Engineer (machine learning engineer): trains, optimizes and runs models in production.
- AI Engineer: builds products on top of models that already exist, such as large language models and AI APIs. It is software engineering applied to AI.
Understanding this difference completely changes what you need to study, and it also changes who you need to hire for each kind of project.
